How Late Can You Play Music at Night

How Late Can You Play Loud Music

April 17, 2020

If you love music, you probably like to play it loud from time to time. If you live in an apartment or close to your neighbors, your ability to play loud music is somewhat dependent upon those around you. Most people accept that it's okay to play music during the day, but loud music late at night is a different question. How late can you play loud music? Does it matter if it's the weekend? Is there a legal answer?

Laws in the U.S. Related to Noise at Night

The accepted standard is that people should not be playing loud music (50 decibels or higher) between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. Many feel that it is acceptable to push that to midnight or 1 a.m. on weekends and holidays.

While these are good rules of thumb, none of these guidelines are laws. People are legally required to respect noise pollution protections, according to the Noise Control Act of 1972 governed by the Environmental Protection Agency. However, local governments and to some extent state governments are responsible for their own noise regulations.

In short, before you play your music over 50 decibels at 10:30 PM, you should do some research into what the regulations are in your state and community. Similarly, before reporting one of your neighbors for loud music late at night, you should know what the rules are.

If you receive noise complaints from your neighbors, the easiest thing is to try to accommodate them, provided that their requests are reasonable. You can always listen with headphones, turn the volume down or install some soundproofing in order to keep your neighbors satisfied.

It's best not to ignore noise complaints from neighbors, especially if you have done the research and know you are violating the rules. Most residential communities take noise complaints very seriously, and repeated violations could result in a huge fine or even jail time.
